Installation Issues

Edit

I have a multiple-CD install that I'm going through and Vista doesn't seem to detect that I have a later CD in the drive.

If you are like me and like listening to music or watching a video while you wait for an install to complete, you may have noticed this.

Long story short, it looks like the Protected Media Path code in Vista tends to cause issues with multiple CD installs IF the Protected Media Path (PMP) is active. The easiest way to get around this is to close anything that enables the PMP, like Windows Media Player, some DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray playback software or the Zune software.

Once the software has been closed, eject the disc and reinsert it and it should be detected without any problems.

Save Game Issues

Edit

I've been running as a standard user and I can't find my save games. Where could they be?

Some games stored their save games in the Program Files folder for the game, but for standard users, Vista puts them in a safe place so that an errant save game or program won't overwrite critical files.

Look in C:\Users\your user name here\AppData\Local\VirtualStore and then drill down to your installation path.

Edit

My game won't let me save, even though I have enough disk space. I'm a standard user.

One of two possibilities exists.

First, someone was running the game as an administrator, saved their game, and the game saved itself into the Program Files folder. The administrator user should log in and clean up his/her save games.

Second, some games have issues saving if your free hard disk space is close to a 2Gb boundary. (2Gb free, 4Gb free, etc.) Either use up or free up some additional disk space to get past that boundary.

Third, your installation path may be too long. Uninstall and reinstall the game into a shorter path.
